Safety Induction

INTRODUCTION

Further to the General Induction Training required for all transport workers, we provide this site-specific induction for all staff and contractors on commencement of employment with Clenton’s Transport.

Visitors to the yard will be supervised at all times and given a specific induction as required.

Site Safety Rules

  • All workers must have a valid driver’s license. 

  • Smoking is only permitted in the Designated Smoking Area(s).

  • No Swearing, Rude hand gestures, or demeaning comments.

  • PPE Must be worn on while in depot at all times 

    • Footwear – Steel Cap Boot.
    • Hi-Visibility clothing if working around mobile plant.
    • Speed limit at depot is strictly 10km 

Pre Start Checks

  • All workers must must complete the relevant pre start safety check before leaving the yard.

  • Complete a physical check of the truck to ensure it is safe to drive. 

  • Ensure that all loads are secure before leaving the yard/site. 

  • Ensure that the loads are within the appropriate General Mass limits and dimensions.
  • It is the drivers responsibility to ensure that the truck is road worthy and safe to drive. 

Licensing & Permits

  • All employees must have appropriate heavy vehicle licence and current licence to continue to work at Clenton’s Transport.
  • You are required to provide a copy of your Driving History every six months as evidence of your licence status. 
  • Drivers will be required to undergo Driver Medical Assessments as  required 
  • Every six months you must provide a copy of your current licence 

COVID Safety

In the following scenarios staff cannot attend work if they have:

  • If they have returned from a COVID-19 hot spot
  • Directed by a Government Body (i.e., NSW Health) to self-isolate
  • Employees who have symptoms of acute respiratory illness are recommended to stay home and not come to work until they are free of fever (37.8° C] or greater using an oral thermometer), signs of a fever, and any other symptoms for at least 24 hours, without the use of fever-reducing or other symptom-altering medicines (e.g., cough suppressants). Employees should notify their supervisor and stay home if they are sick.

Staff can attend work if they are a household close contact but must undertake a daily Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) and wear a mask at all times whilst at work for the 7 days since the close contact. If you test positive you should not attend work.

Employees who are in isolation due to one of the above situations should alert their Manager. Depending on the type of work, and providing the employee is well, flexible work options from home maybe offered but this will be determined on a case by case basis. If working from home is not viable the employee will be able to access Personal Carer’s Leave or annual leave entitlements.

COVID Safety Practices should occur:

  • Staff should regularly clean their equipment
  • Do not shake hands with staff, clients & visitors
  • Wear a mask if not able to socially distance from others
  • Use sanitiser regularly

SWMS "Safe Work Method Statements"

  • SWMS must be developed in consultation with relevant workers.
  • SWMS must comply with requirements of current WHS regulations.
  • Workers must comply with SWMS at all times.
  • SWMS must be available and accessible by all workers.
  • SWMS must be updated to reflect any changes and communicated to workers.
  • SWMS must be read, understood and signed by relevant workers.

Truck Safety

  • As a the responsible driver of Truck you must ensure it is safe to drive at all times.
  • Carry out daily vehicle checks to ensure the truck is roadworthy.
  • Ensure all loads are secure.
  • Ensure all loads are within weight limits.
  • Notify management of any faults or mechanical repairs required to trucks

Worker Responsibilities

  • All persons on site must treat each other professionally.
  • Discrimination will not be tolerated.
  • Workplace bullying, violence or practical jokes is not acceptable.
  • Workers must take reasonable care of their health and safety and ensure that their actions (or inactions) do not put others at risk.
  • Workers must comply with SWMS, policies and procedures at this site.
  • Workers must participate in Toolbox Talks and safety meetings where possible.
  • Workers must disclose any medical conditions that may impact on the fitness to operate/drive a truck.
  • All workers must have the right to work in Australia 
  • Have a current Police Check 
  • Provide accurate employment history information on application for employment 
  • Complete any specific site inductions as required 

Housekeeping

  • All staff are expected to clean up after themselves and put rubbish in bins. 
  • All company vehicles are to be kept clean and tidy and must be washed regularly. 
  • Workers are responsible for cleaning their work area prior to starting work.

Plant & Equipment

  • Plant & Equipment must be used for designated purpose and within manufacturer limitations.
  • Persons Operating Plant & Equipment, trucks (including forklifts) must NOT use their mobile phones. Including Making and Receiving calls, sending receiving of texts or using any other feature.
  • Operators must have required training and be “competent” before using forklift and trucks.
  • Pre-Start checks must be conducted before Plant/Equipment/trucks are used each day.
  • PPE must be worn as per manufacturer recommendations.
  • Plant & Equipment must be serviced as per manufacturers recommendations.
  • Exclusion zones should be setup where possible.

Emergencies, Evacuation
& First Aid

  • Workers must report all Incidents and Injuries to the  Manager and complete an Incident form ASAP.
  • The Emergency Evacuation Procedures will be explained to you by your  Site Supervisor.
  • The evacuation point is marked in the Evacuation Procedure displayed at site.
  • Workers must know the location of First Aid Kits and Fire Extinguishers and ensure truck first aid kits are fully stocked at all times.
  • Workers should call 000 in the event of an emergency.
  • Workers must know the location of the nearest Medical Facility.

Drugs & Alcohol

  • There is a ZERO tolerance for drug and Alcohol use.
  • You must not be under the influence of Drugs or Alcohol while at work.
  • While employed by Clenton’s Transport you may undergo random Drug and Alcohol testing.
  • During your employment, you may undergo drug and alcohol testing. 
  • Workers must report any suspicious activity to the Transport Manager or Director.
  • You may not bring any drugs or alcohol to work at any time. 
  • Any employee found to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol may have their employment terminated. 

Fit To Work

  • A driver must not drive a fatigue-regulated heavy vehicle on a road while impaired by fatigue.
  • It is important to spot the signs of fatigue as listed below:
  • Your body

    • A lack of alertness
    • Inability to concentrate
    • Making more mistakes than usual
    • Drowsiness, falling asleep or micro-sleeps
    • Difficulty keeping your eyes open
    • Not feeling refreshed after a sleep
    • Excessive head nodding or yawning
    • Blurred vision
    • Mood changes
    • Changes to personal health or fitness

    Your vehicle

    • Near miss or incident
    • Not keeping in a single lane
    • Not maintaining a constant speed
    • Overshooting a sign or line
    • Poor gear changes
  •  If you experience fatigue you should stop driving immediately and notify the Transport Manager. 

Loading & Unloading

  • Avoid working at heights – ensure gaps or drop offs on loading areas are protected to prevent falls.
  • Wear hi vis/reflective uniforms at all times
  • Park in designated areas, which should be clear of overhead power lines, firm ground, free from pedestrians and have clear visibility.
  • Turn off engine and isolate power to vehicle.
  • Monitor traffic and other hazards.
  • Use signage where required.

Supervisor Notes

  • The Transport Manager will show you how to operate the Tele Navman in your truck and the Freight Tracker App. 
  • Please download Freight Tracker from the App store or Google Play Store. 
  • The Transport Manager will show you the First Aid and Fire Extinguisher location.
